Michigan Central Railroad collection.

This collection consists of maps and a manual of the Michigan Central Railroad, and is arranged in two series. The first series, maps of leased urban properties (1886-1894), contains 109 detailed drawings of the properties and buildings owned by the Railroad adjacent to its right-of-way in various communities. These plans usually show lot lines, cultural features, and names of businesses using a particular building. The second series, locomotive classification manual (1905), is a 69-page manual which lists all of the engines owned by the Railroad, along with a number of particulars about them, including class, type, cylinders, boilers, weight, capacity and builder.

On March 20, 1837, legislation providing for work to proceed on three railroads and two canals in Michigan became law. One of the railroads -- the central -- was to connect Detroit and St. Joseph through the second tier of counties. Based upon preliminary work already done by the Detroit and St. Joseph Railroad Company (whose rights and properties were purchased by the state), the railroad was able to begin operation (at least as far as Dearborn) by the end of 1837.
